Foreword

The International Conference on Spatial Information for Sustainable Development, held in Nairobi, Kenya 2-5 October, was organized by the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK), the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat).

The conference became a reality because of support and help from the main sponsors United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), GEOMAPS and Institution of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya (IQSK), the co-sponsors Metrocosmo Valuers Ltd, University of Nairobi, Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions and SwedeSurvey AB and a number of companies and institutions who have contributed in one way or another.

Spatial Data Infrastructure and Spatial Information Management is clearly in the focus for all surveyors and other stakeholders worldwide in their diverse tasks in development, planning and resource management and in their efforts at creating and supporting a sustainable development.

At the same time the theme of the conference is strongly related to the international community 's efforts to advance the implementation of the Habitat Agenda (paragraphs 76 and 114) as well as the implementation of important elements of Chapters 7,10 and 40 of the Agenda 21.

Finally, the conference has offered the speakers as well as the participants in general opportunity to focus on and discuss spatial information issues in Africa.

The conference concentrated on the following sub-themes:

  • Spatial Data Infrastructure and Spatial Information Management
  • The Role of Spatial Information in Land Tenure, Land Administration and Spatial Planning
  • Low Cost Housing and
  • Spatial Information, Education and Best Practices.

In total there were almost 100 presentations. Some were based on research and developing trends, others were based on projects and experiences.

Apart from a few the presentations are printed as independent articles in this book.

The Nairobi Statement has been published separately.
