Welcome to Minjerribah, a breathtaking island known for its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Nestled in the heart of Moreton Bay, this unspoiled paradise is home to pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and abundant wildlife. Minjerribah is also a place of deep cultural significance to the Quandamooka people, whose connection to the land stretches back thousands of years. Whether you're exploring its rugged coastlines, swimming in crystal-clear waters, or learning about its ancient history, Minjerribah offers a unique and unforgettable experience for all who visit.

Minjerribah, or North Stradbroke Island, is the third largest sand island in Queensland (K’gari to the north being the largest in the world).  While celebrated for its natural beauty, Minjerribah has also been the site of complex development and land use debates. One of the most controversial issues has been sand mining, which had taken place on the island for decades. This industry has significantly impacted the environment, particularly the island's dunes and coastal ecosystems, sparking concerns about long-term damage to the land and wildlife. Over the years, various development projects, including tourism facilities and residential areas, have also raised tensions with the local community and environmental groups. At the heart of these debates is the Quandamooka people's call for greater recognition and control over their ancestral lands, as they work to preserve both their cultural heritage and the island’s natural resources. The challenge of balancing development with environmental protection and Indigenous rights remains a key issue for Minjerribah.

The Minjerribah day trips from Brisbane on Saturday 5th and Friday 11th April will allow delegates to experience a unique natural environment as we journey across Moreton Bay by ferry to the west coast of the island.  Delegates will be welcomed at Brown Lake by Quandamooka cultural heritage guide Josh Walker who will explain the history and significance of this ‘perched’ lake to the traditional owners.  The tour will move to the North Stradbroke Island Museum at Dunwich to hear from Queensland Government experts on the land management and land use challenges faced by the community since European settlement.  The tour will then travel to the east coast and the settlement at Point Lookout (Queensland’s most easterly point) and an iconic coastline.  The easy 1.2km gorge walk provides stunning views of the headlands, beaches and Pacific Ocean with whales, dolphins, rays and turtles regularly seen in season.  This walk will be guided by Quandamooka and departmental staff.  The walk concludes  at the Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club above Main Beach for a lunch featuring the best local produce and drinks.  The tour will return to Dunwich for the return ferry trip to Cleveland and conclude at the Brisbane Exhibition & Convention Centre.

Important Information:  April temperatures High 26C (79F) and Low 16C (61F), a light jacket and a hat and comfortable covered shoes are recommended.  There are steps and stairs as well as non-paved paths on the tour.  Toilet facilities are available on the coach and ferry as well as all tour stops.  The tour will proceed irrespective of weather – sunscreen and wet weather protection (ponchos) will be made available to delegates.
